IWC Schaffhausen Watch Review 2019

IWC Schaffhausen Watch Review 2019. IWC Schaffhausen is a premier International Watch Company based in Schaffhausen, a town in the far north-east of Switzerland. On the border of Germany being separated only by the mighty Rhine and very close by to the Rhine Falls, which is Europe’s largest waterfall.

How did IWC Shaffhausen come about?

IWC has been an important part of the chocolate-box type pretty medieval town since its inception in 1868 by the young dashing American engineer and businessman named Florentine Ariosto Jones, who after fine tuning his horological skills in Boston, went about to start his own factory in Switzerland where the skills base was outstanding and the wages low.

Negotiations with workers in the western part of Switzerland where most watchmakers were settled proved to be fruitless, as they became worried about his plans for the mass production of quality watches. Jones started to look elsewhere in the country and came accross the Schaffhausen industrialist Heinrich Moser, who agreed to rent him a manufacturing premises right next to his recently opened Rhine hydro electric plant. Jones’s venture ran into trouble and his dream appeared not to last long as IWC went bust in 1875 and was taken over by the Schaffhausen Handelsbank the following year.

Over the years IWC has been passed through various ownership hands without anything spectacular happening until when during the 1990s with new owners it was revitalised by Günter Blümlein an alchemist of the watch industry, famous as a visionary who was responsible for reviving some of today’s best-loved watch brands, including Jaeger-LeCoultre.

IWC a global player with 1000+ outlets

Richemount the luxury goods giant has been the new owner of IWC since 2000 which means that IWC can now regard the likes of Piaget and Cartier as its stablemates. In the meantime IWC has grown from being a niche brand favoured by hardcore horophiles into one with some 1,000 points of sale worldwide. IWC also now has over 70 stand-alone boutiques globally, including Hong Kong, London, New York, Tokyo, Moscow, Singapore and Beijing to name a few.

What is the style of IWC all about?

IWC uses a number of slogans including “engineered for men” which leaves no doubts as to the target audience of the IWC brand. Styling and marketing are geared towards offering a comprehensive but tightly curated selection for the perfect watch wardrobe.

The collection comprises various dress watches known as “Portofino”, flight watches with Big watch faces as well as smaller ones too such as the MK XV, a “tool” watch known as “Ingenieur”, diving watches known as “Aquatimer” and everyday classic “Portuguese”.

The watch designs combine genuine functionality with great aesthetic versatility. If there is such a watch known as a formal sports watch, then IWC is the brand that manufactures it.

The typical IWC man would be aged from 35 to 55 years of age with a  Hybrid career, something like an all round product designer, modernist architect, gallerist, actor, pilot or even a combination. He would wear  Pared-down sports tech. the likes of Coppens or Lanvin, in effect trendy but not a show-off. Culturally the IWC man might possibly be interested in the Bauhaus movement and would probably be able to name the architect behind every outstanding home in Palm Springs. As a couch potatoe the IWC man would be snug and comfy watching classic wartime films including 633 Squadron, The Dam Busters and Reach for the Sky.

Top models to look out for

There are a number of models to look out for with IWC with the vintage ones performing the best as investment watches. especially so with IWC’s Portuguese range, reminiscent to a model made in 1939 at the request of some Portuguese watch importers, believing that there was great latent demand for a large wristwatch with the accuracy of a marine chronometer. IWC duely installed a highly accurate pocket-watch movement into a plain 41.5mm case with the option of simple black or silvered dials. The Portuguese went into limited production until 1958 before being reproduced for IWC’s 125th anniversary celebrations in 1993.

Many regard The Portuguese as an absolute quintessential piece to own from the IWC Shaffhausen stable. A number of different versions are  available with the most sought after being perhaps the Portuguese Chronograph 3714. This delightful masterpiece has a crisp, vertical sub-dial layout and is a classic timepiece that appears to be already made to perfection and cannot be improved upon. A nice version to go for would be the white dialled gold hour markers and blue steel seconds hands model as a collection building starter which you can pick up for around $7000.

IWC has undoubtedly earned its reputation as one of the world’s finest manufacturers of Swiss luxury watches. IWC only manufactures automatic and manual watches including the chronograph with GMT dual time zone.
